Exploring Margret Preston's Wood Cuts:

What do I see?



In this wood cut I see a variety of organic shapes. The first thing you look at is the dull, Rosemary green leaves that pull that your eyes in with the black background in that area. The reading path shows you around the leaves that have been placed around across the painting in all direction to give the painting a natural, unshaped feel. You automatically get the feeling of movement. Your eyes, moving away from the tonal leaves, direct their attention the cream coloured flowers shooting up from behind the leaves. They pull your eyes to the right hand side of the picture as you get the feeling that the wind is blowing in that direction. You notice their thin stems with small daisy like flowers. When you have finished examining the flowers your eyes are pulled to the thick brownie orange, bamboo like stems of the leaves. Their light, but in comparison to the leaves and flowers, bright colour helps you to look closely at them. The vertical lines pull you eyes back to leaves where the whole process begins again.

Looking closely at the colour:

The dull colours of the leaves and flowers create a fantastic contrast with the steams. The colour choices make the artwork more inviting and easy going. The colours, used tonaly, create a subtle organic feel. The colours are divided into three main groups-this creates a clear reading path. The simple colours that take you on a journey through the picture give you a unique insight into the creation of the wood print.

Looking at Line:

The lines of the artwork create the feeling of movement. The varied styles of line - straight, curvey, rounded- show the natural movement. Showing that movement does not neccasarily need to be represented by curves the lines make it imaginable that the print was actually moving. The lines greatly influence the feel of this print.

Last but not least-Placement:

The three obviouse colour blocks of the work are placed very carfuly to create an organic and moving feel. They are placed with a blank section in the top right hand corner to give the work a definate background. The leaves are placed with utmost care, in all directtions, with the steams placed with no real end to creat mystery.

This wood cut print is an exceptional example of Margret Preston's work. With all the visual elements created with utmost care and presision creating a fantastic artork for generations to come.

We had to compose an image that will tell people about not littering. I found my image in a book and scanned it to the computer. The image is by Georgia O'keefe and the saying is an Australian Aboriginal Proverb. The Saying is:

• The image I have chosen works well and shows great depth.
• The text is not too substantial and is easy to read.
• The the text is meaningful and the font and text works with the image not against it.
• It gives of an easy to understand message
• It is not boring
• The text colour works well
• It is not too simple but not too complicated
• The reading path is clear
• All the visual design elements are there

• She is chiefly known for paintings in which she synthesizes abstraction and representation in paintings of flowers, rocks, shells, animal bones and landscapes. Her paintings present crisply contoured forms that are replete with subtle tonal transitions of varying colors, and she often transformed her subject matter into powerful abstract images.

• Many of her friends told her about traveling and she, as a result looked for inspiration by taveling and exploring new places. She enjoyed expeirmenting with different media.
• Georgia was intresed in art and creating images not what other people think of her art.

Our task: Find an advertising image from the Internet, place it on your blog and describe what is happening, is it effective, why and what visual elements have been used.

What is happening

A cute dog is laying in a hammock looking very casual and below are some shoes with the words "Casual Hush Puppies" above them.

Is it effective and why?:

Yes. It is suppose to capture a woman's cute side and make them think, "wow that's so cute. I must buy some!"
It is also a bit of a word pay as the "puppies" does not mean the dog. Also the word casual is supposed to relate to the dog looking so casual. I think it is a good advertisement.

What visual elements have been used?:
Some of the visual elements that have been used include:

• Tone in the background
• Placement
• Colour
• Texture
• Balance
• Depth

Well that's that task. When you see an interesting advertisment. Think about it...not just about what you are going to bye.

Today i did my final PC draft. Mrs Sandburg liked my music design. Although it is back to front in this picture you get the genal idea of what we are doing. I have worked on on my design for three weeks taking into account all the comments Mrs Sandburg made and finally it is almost perfect. When i do my final copy i will post it.
