1/2/10 Homework: Surrealism

First lesson of art for 2010 (YAY), with a new teacher, Mrs Vincent, it's time to get moving...
So, "Look up the word SURREALISM. Write your definition of the word."

After a rather intensive Google search, I realised that a traditional definition (one of only one or two sentences) would not be applicable to this word. Here is my attempt to define the word in
less than fifty words.

Surrealism is an artistic style and movement that attempts to express the subconscious and/or non rational using visual imagery and -this is a new word for me that I found on
http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/glo/surrealism/ ) - incongruous juxtaposition (that basically means that
things don't really fit together or make sense when used together- especially when those 'items' are disturbing or unconventional in the first place) without an intention to make the work logically comprehensible.

Fail, that was a few more than fifty words.

Also, we were asked to name two surrealist artist and find two works from each of them.

The first artist I chose was Vladamir Kush. Here are two of his works:

I really liked many of his works, here is a link to a few others, and the source of these ones:
petit.org/Presse/kush_surrealiste_russe/kush1.htm Of course, his works are not restricted to this site, a simple Google search will get you some more results.

Ok, next artist, this is the guy everyone thinks of when they think 'surrealism'... melting clock? Ringing any bells? Well yes, thats who I am talking about- Salvador Dali. He also did this one, I KNOW you have seen it before, but I really like it:

Ok, I think I get the general idea of surrealism. -which is good!

Sites used but not already mentioned (I know it isn't a proper bibliography, but to be honest, I am not in the mood):
www.tate.org.uk/.../dali_lightscamera.htm (second Salvador Dali painting)
lipstickandpolitics.com/?p=334 (first Salvador Dali painting)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surrealism -I don't want to admit it, but it helped with the definition.
